Hopefully one day, I'll get around to seeing the remake, but I'm sort of glad that the first half remains the same. I think that the first half of the story is the best and while the second act of the movie is quite tense and suspenseful, it doesn't match the almost playful and very entertaining emotions which the first act can conjure. I think it works very well on its own terms as a quirky adaptation full of Pinteresque menace and benefitting from Kenneth Branagh's ability to truly get the best from his actors. In a way I prefer that they be so different as the two films can be enjoyed without the comparative differences getting in the way. And Caine is great as the husband. The solution to Andrew Wyke's novel in the beginning of the novel is uproarious.

I'm surprised that you liked the remake. I have not seen it, but I have not heard any positive things about it. It seems as though the movie tried to be different for the sake of being different.
